about
Ah, the tavern music. This was a weird one. If you take a listen to the bonus track "Clockwork Thief," that was actually the original tavern music, based off of a harpsichord piece I wrote years ago. It was actually one of the very first finished pieces of music for the game. But then, I wrote everything else, we revisited the tavern music, and it wasn't right anymore. When showcased next to the rest of the works, that other theme just sounded too whimsical. So, it was back to the drawing board, which was really strange to do so late in the process.
So, this doesn't have chiptune concept partner piece, all things considered. Rather, this is a subtle nod to the Scumm Bar theme from the Monkey Island series, composed by Michael Land. I wanted to take that vibe and make it work in the MazeQuest 2 world, and it was a lot of fun.
Adding to the exotic aspect in this one would be the sounds of Middle Eastern fiddle, hurdy gurdy, and hand cymbals. I also made sure to include bassoon, to fully round out the tip-of-the-hat to LucasArts. Have you ever noticed how much bassoon gets woven into their adventure game music?
