about
The Astra theme, like just a couple others on this soundtrack, was actually versioned from something I wrote several years ago. Another project came my way shortly after college, in which I needed to write a full-on Baroque organic fugue for a villain in a short film. Well, I did my part, and then weirdly enough, the film went into limbo and was never finished. (That actually happens a lot.)
So, I had this organ fugue, with no home. Along came MazeQuest 2, years later, and the theme seemed to fit perfect for Astra.
The tricky part was that the concepted theme was solo organ. It didn't have any orchestration, embellishment, counterpoint... it was just non-stop. It took a good deal of work to take the basic underlying theme and fully orchestrate it into an "organ plus accompaniment" situation. Into the mix was appended some harpsichord, celeste, choir, tubular bells, and more. Even the overall sequencing experienced some revision. In fact, there were enough variations even to facilitate a "bonus track" arrangement of the theme (also on this album), in which the order was moved around a bit and a few ancillary sections were added to the piece.
