about
Map 2, aka Goblin Caverns, was described to me as an underground, cavernous area, in which the enemies consisted of goblins and the like. The music, in turn, needed to be a bit darker, and funkier. I smiled at the idea. And I deliberately left this track for later in the process, knowing that I could just knock it out of the park.
In reality, it took quite a few revisions. The chiptune version, loosely based off a very popular retro underground theme (high fives if you recognize the riff I developed this off of), hit the nail on the head. However, developing a fully orchestrated version that struck the right level of fusion took some work. On the surface, sure, you'll hear the funky bass groove, string accompaniment, and ethnic leads. Underneath, there are subtle layers of zither, choir, sitar, wind chime, and more that required a lot of tweaking. After all, the track couldn't stand out too strongly from the rest of the soundtrack, and yet, it taps into some unique and specific palette choices. Ultimately, the mixing and mastering on this determined the proper blend of sounds, and I'm quite happy with the results.
