about

Behold, the epic main title theme from MazeQuest 2. Compared to the chiptune concept piece, this one jumps right in and "gets to the good stuff," so to speak. The goal here was to try and establish, quickly, both a sound palette that could transition to the rest of the soundtrack, and some melodic motifs that could be revisited over the course of the album.

Sonically, we have a combination of orchestral, ethnic, gothic, and electronic. Brass and strings combine with organs and synths. Adding to the flair I've snuck in some Alpen Horns, and some Alexandor Brandon-esque tracker percussion. Rounding it off is some subtle choir and harp. From the get-go, you get a little bit of everything.

Melodically, what's established here is sort of a shifting D tonality - leaning on the Dorian mode but not being too strict about it - and a 4-note motif starting with E-F#-D-A that gets morphed and mutated throughout this track and several others.

Lastly... I wasn't trying to make this sound like the theme from Terminator... that much is purely coincidence. :)
