This is the very first thing I wrote for MazeQuest. I was trying to craft a main theme that would work on a variety of levels: establish a reusable motif, determine a core modality for the soundtrack, and hit a mood that is powerful, regal, and energetic.

I learned a few things. I learned that the game developer doesn’t like trills. I learned that he also doesn’t care for long intros, which is why the final version of this theme doesn’t have the first 30 seconds of this concept piece orchestrated. In a weird twist, the E-F#-D-A motif that I built many of the other themes on was first established within those 30 seconds… which never made it to the game.

You may also notice some subtle nods in this piece to other famous tunes that speak to my generation, such as Legend of Zelda and Terminator. Subtle, but they amuse me nonetheless.

All in all, this draft was solid enough to use as a starting point, and I went on from there to write the rest!
