about
If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that this particular track does not have a corresponding chiptune concept piece. That's because the original themes that were concepted - even orchestrated - for Map 5, never quite landed.
The original request was that the music satisfy a volcanic, alien landscape, and by the way, it's the last map. While my first versions were good, they weren't quite right. So, very late in the process, I did something that I only attempted a few times in this entire soundtrack's development process: compose with full electronic orchestration while writing. I was always hesitant to do that early on, considering I wanted the compositional elements to remain strong and true, and not be tied to specific samples or soundscapes. In this case (and just a couple others) though, it made sense, and it worked. The Map 5 aka Mt. Chaos theme consists of a playful combination of vibraphone, fat bass sounds, abstract string effects, and some growl samples that I developed myself.
